The Power of Staying Connected: Why Local News and Community Matter More Than Ever

In Episode 6 of Suzi Says, I had the pleasure of chatting with Susie Williams, a passionate advocate for rural connectivity and the creator of the Fleurieu App. Our conversation highlighted the importance of staying connected in regional communities—whether it's through local news, emergency updates, or simply knowing where to find the best coffee in town.

Why Staying Connected is a Necessity, Not a Luxury

For those of us in rural and regional areas, local news isn't just a nice-to-have—it’s essential. Unlike in the city, where information is constantly at our fingertips, regional communities often struggle with access to timely news, emergency updates, and even basic local services.

Susie shared how the closure of traditional local news outlets, like regional newspapers and TV stations, has left a significant gap in rural communities. As someone who grew up in the Air Peninsula and has lived in various rural regions across South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and even New Zealand, she saw firsthand how vital it is to have a reliable source of local information.

That’s exactly why she created the Fleurieu App—a free, all-in-one digital space designed to keep people informed, connected, and engaged. Whether it’s real-time updates on road closures, sports results, or business listings, the app ensures that people in the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island regions have access to the information they need, when they need it.

More Than Just News, It’s About Community

Beyond just news and updates, Susie highlighted another critical aspect of staying connected: maintaining a sense of belonging. Without kids in school or regular participation in local sports, it can be easy to lose touch with what’s happening in the community. The Fleurieu App helps bridge that gap, providing a digital space where people can still feel a part of local life.

And it’s not just for residents—visitors also benefit. Whether they're looking for upcoming events, local businesses, or even emergency alerts, the app serves as a go-to guide for anyone in the region.

The Personal Rewards of Community Connection

One of the most inspiring moments of our conversation was when Susie discussed why she perseveres, despite the challenges of running a business during tough economic times. Her motivation? The messages she receives from people thanking her for what she’s built. Knowing that she’s making a real difference in people’s lives makes all the hard work worth it.

This resonated deeply with me because, at the core of everything I do, it's about connection—helping people find support, resources, and a sense of belonging in tough times. Whether through mental health first aid, resilience coaching, or even just sharing stories like Susie’s, the goal is always to build stronger, more connected communities.

Looking After Ourselves So We Can Look After Others

Of course, staying connected to a community is one thing, but staying connected to ourselves is just as important. Susie spoke about the life lessons she has learned over the years, including prioritising sleep, exercise, and making time for meaningful conversations—whether that’s with her husband on a date night or an honest chat with a close friend.

She also opened up about facing some incredibly tough personal challenges, including a breast cancer diagnosis at 40 while raising three young children. Through it all, she’s learned the importance of self-care—not as a selfish act, but as a necessity. Because, as she put it so perfectly, ‘If my wheels fall off, everybody’s does'

A Reminder to Stay Connected

Susie’s story is a powerful reminder that community connection isn’t just about convenience—it’s about resilience, well-being, and looking out for one another. Whether through digital platforms like the Fleurieu App, checking in on a neighbor, or simply making the effort to stay involved, every small act of connection matters.

So, if you’re in a rural area, I encourage you to take advantage of local resources, support small businesses, and most importantly—stay connected. Because no one should feel isolated, no matter where they live.
