Building Resilience This Christmas Season
The holiday season can be a joyful time, but it can also test our mental and emotional limits. From juggling work deadlines and family obligations to managing financial pressures and personal expectations, it’s no wonder so many of us feel stretched thin.
This is where resilience comes in—a powerful inner strength that helps us bounce back from challenges, adapt to stress, and keep going even when life feels overwhelming.
What Is Resilience?
Think of resilience as your mental fitness. Just as physical fitness helps your body handle exertion, resilience helps your mind navigate stress, change, and adversity. It’s not about avoiding difficulties or pretending they don’t exist; it’s about recognising them, facing them, and finding ways to move forward.
We all have resilience—it’s part of being human. But just like physical fitness, resilience can be built and strengthened with practice, especially during times when life feels harder than usual.
How to Be Resilient This Holiday Season
Check-in with Yourself
Take a moment to assess your current resilience level.
🌸Are you feeling emotionally drained?
🌸Are small setbacks hitting harder than usual?
🌸Do you feel like you’re coping well, or could you use extra support?
Awareness is the first step to building resilience. Once you understand where you’re at, you can take steps to strengthen your mental fitness.
Focus on What You Can Control
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by everything that might go wrong—the endless to-do list, family dynamics, or unexpected challenges. Instead, focus on what’s within your control:
🌸Prioritise tasks and let go of perfectionism.
🌸Set boundaries with your time and energy.
🌸Plan ahead for potential stressors, like budgeting or managing holiday schedules.
Lean on Your Support Network
Resilience isn’t about going it alone.
Reaching out to friends, family, or colleagues for help or simply sharing how you’re feeling can be a game-changer. Connection strengthens us, especially during tough times.
Practice Self-Care
Building resilience starts with looking after your own needs. Ask yourself:
🌸Am I getting enough sleep?
🌸Am I eating nourishing foods and staying hydrated?
🌸Am I taking breaks to rest and recharge?
Small acts of self-care, like going for a walk, practicing deep breathing, or even just sitting quietly with a cup of tea, can help you feel more centred and ready to face the day.
Reframe Challenges
Instead of seeing difficulties as insurmountable problems, try viewing them as opportunities to grow.
🌸What can I learn from this experience?
🌸How can I use this challenge to build my strength?
Resilience thrives on perspective. While you can’t always control what happens, you can control how you respond.
Celebrate the Small Wins
Resilience is built through action—taking small steps, even when the path ahead feels steep. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Got through a tough conversation? Finished that project at work? Stayed calm in a stressful moment?
Give yourself credit for every win.
